The Missed Connections Ad Writes Itself

I’m still thinking

about the beautiful man

who sweetly asked me out

outside the New Apple Farm Market

where I was feeding B strawberries

from a paper carton. She was four

or five, blonde enough to be my daughter,

offering strawberry stems to her small

blind dog. I startled

at his question and fumbled to explain

I was not mother to this child

or this dog, but nevertheless

unavailable for a date and

we parted ways, both of us confused

and at least one of us a bit awestruck

by the tiny awkward love poem

that had just fluttered open

on the sidewalk.
